About our geraniums.
We have a good collection of zonal, seed, scented and fancy leaf geraniums.

Geraniums are versatile plants and can be used in a number of ways. The fancy leaf, zonal and seed type work well in window boxes or containers and can be planted in a garden as well.
Its fun to mix up the colors, both leaf and bloom for maximum impact.

They like it sunny and because they are a type of succulent they like to dry out from time to time.
Dead heading or removing old blooms will keep the plants from looking shabby and encourage new growth.
The same goes for wilted leaves. Grasp the bloom or leaf stem firmly and pull down and away. Discard any discolored or strange looking leaves.

Geraniums do not seem to susceptible to pests other than the occasional mealy bug. They look like little fuzzy growths usually at the intersection of a stem on on the bottom of a leaf. If you see one just pick it off and keep an eye on that plant.

If you absolutely have to use some type of insecticide look for a combination of canola oil and pyrethrum. This should take care of most any type of pest you are likely to encounter.

We put time release fertilizer in our geraniums and its a good idea to add a little more though out the season.
Geraniums can be brought inside for the winter and kept growing.
Another way to keep your geraniums is to put them in a cool rather dark place and water very sparingly.
When spring comes repot with some time release fertilizer. Trim old growth back and put them in the sun.
Just remember that they will not take freezing too well so wait until the weather is consistently above freezing at night.

Ivy geraniums are perfect for baskets and container because they tend to sprawl and trail down. We mix them with German ivy which also trails.

The scented geraniums are interesting in that they give off fragrance when the leaves are touched or even when the wind blows by. There are a surprising number of scented varieties ranging from citrus and citronella, ( mosquito plant ) to of all things kerosene. They work well in baskets and containers.
Some of the blooms are very small and others like the lemon are large and striking.
