About

Welcome to our zone 4 cold weather garden blog.

We started this journal with the idea that we could share garden ideas, especially in our colder zone 4 climate.

We are located in Northern New York State.  Please note this is not upstate, we are a stones throw from Canada.  Our weather tends to be cool in the winter.  Temperatures can fall below 30 below zero F.

Our spring planting date is Memorial Day and we play fall by ear.

We started this journal as a way to keep track of the goings on from day to day but we have found out that it takes a fair amount of time to keep a blog.  Since there is always something going on around the property it is not hard to fine topics to write on but the biggest problem is we do not always have the time to post.

We especially want to address the problems of zone 4 gardening.  In the days of big box garden stores good local information is not always easy to fine.  It is not uncommon to find plants and shrubs for sale locally that are tagged for much warmer climates.  The workers do not seem to understand or care.  The pat answer is “they are guaranteed so just bring them back if they die”.   The big problem here is beginning gardeners become disillusioned when their plants die, thinking they are poor gardeners when the real problem is the plants were not right for this cold climate.

Besides this site we have a wedding favor site, theweddingdept.com and wild bird feeders, wildbirds.net, with blogs and web cams on those sites as well.  We have plenty to do all the time, life is good !

Please feel free to contribute or drop us a line or call anytime.

Best wishes, Tom and Phyllis
